The Marikina River is beyond BEYOND its highest alert.

Navotas, Malabon, Muntinlupa, Marikina, Valenzuela, San Juan, Manila, Pasay, Pasig, Pateros are all under a State of Calamity.

That’s 10 out 17 cities in the National Capital Region. Nearby provinces Laguna, Zambales, Bulacan, areas of Rizal are also under a State of Calamity.

The Supreme Court has declared a suspension of work. NCR has suspended classes in all levels.

My question really is simple: why have we not declared the suspension of work for our private sector? Why are we so willing to risk the lives of our own people? Why can we not let them stay with their families in a time like this, regardless of whether they are directly adversely affected by these rains or not?

Because you know that is what PNoy must be thinking: not everyone is affected by the rains and floods, so why suspend across the city? The answer is so simply a question, too: why would any government force people to step out and endanger their lives at a time like this one? What is it that we’re valuing more here, than the lives of our own people?

The saddest thing of course is that we know the answer to that question.
