went to the “unveiling” of sorts of the Philippine art that’s up for auction at Salcedo Auctions, and i could only be overwhelmed by that collection. i of course gravitated towards the Santi Boses (two!) that are up for auction, particularly pages of him talking about his work in his own handwriting — *weep* — in a letter written in 1976 — *sniff sniff*
but there’s also “Bataan,” a 1949 Fernando Amorsolo, though more than that they’ve also got “A Portrait of a Spanish Lady,” a 1920 crayon-on-paper portrait. was also blown away by the rarely seen (at least by me) 1981 work of Vicente Manansala in woodcut entitled “Birds,” an Ang Kiukok 1979 “Nude” that actually is conventional nude, a circa 1885 Juan Luna untitled landscape piece, and Arturo Luz’s black and white works.
it reminds me of what Mabi said about publishing independently, and trusting that at some point books will find their way to readers. here one can only be excited about art that might and will (and should!) fall into the hands of owners who deserve them. ideally over and above the fact they can afford it, yes? yes.

i wanted to shout and tell the bidders i paid MUCH MORE than that for the SANTI BOSE manuscripts….but i couldnt…hahahaa. All the big guys were there.,,,dont worry i sold some items at higher bids…hahahaa…so i didnt wind up crying…
