As the House of Representatives’ Committee on Justice, led by Duterte Man Rep Reynaldo Umali, continued its hearings to decide on whether or not there is probable cause for the Sereno impeachment, what became obvious was that this was a concerted effort to get the Chief Justice to crumble and just resign. After all, the allegations against her were being made public, and in the hands of Duterte’s men in Congress, these were being spun into fact. This is exactly what they did to Senator Leila de Lima, who used every platform available to her to fight back, hysteria and tears and all, including playing the victim card, which also arguably made things worse for her: this gave Duterte’s propagandists, troll army, and social media employees the ammunition to use her as object and subject of their propaganda.

CJ Sereno knows better, and refuses to play Duterte’s game. And they must hate her for not playing into their hands. (more…)

Asec #Mocha is correct …

There ARE many, more important, things to talk about, other than her award from the UST Alumni Association Inc. I couldn’t care less about the fact that she was given it, in fact, and it must be said that it is absolutely offensive that the photos of Asec Mocha’s past life are being reposted on social media just to point out that she is undeserving of this award. Seriously: since when did this kind of shaming, as bound to an unapologetic conservatism, cloaked in Catholic righteousness, been acceptable?  (more…)

I have absolutely no reason to like House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez — in fact he has fashioned himself as one of the worst Presidential allies, who spreads about as much false information as government’s social media army, and lays it on even thicker by being an unapologetic misogynist boor.

Now, I do not doubt that he has pushed for Congress to work on the dissolution of marriage bill so that he can get out of his own marriage, and continue living with the woman / women he so chooses — he has after all admitted to having fathered eight children with three different women. But that’s just it: without meaning to, and no matter what he says, Alvarez has revealed how he is in fact the best example of why women need a kinder, more compassionate, way to end marriages that have long been dead. A direct translation wouldn’t capture how offensive this rhetorical question is, coming from the mouth of any man or woman, as it normalizes and rationalizes the practice of infidelity and polygamy, because look, all men are doing it! And as long as these men can take care of the children they sire, from one, two, three women they keep in their beds, then they are doing the decent thing, they are doing what is right.

Wrong. Especially when these words come from the President’s mouth, and these statements that condone and justify men’s alleged precondition to treat women as objects to be collected – because women are their kaligayahan (happiness), because there are so many women so little time – are spoken publicly, to the laughter of a necessarily captive enamored audience.
